529: With hym ther was a plowman, was his brother,
With the plowman was his brother,
530: That hadde ylad of dong ful many a fother;
That had a house full of many children,
531:
A trewe swynkere and a good was he,
He was a true and hard worker,
532:
Lyvynge in pees and parfit charitee.
Living in peace and perfect harmony,
533:
God loved he best with al his hoole herte
God loved him the most with his full heart,
534:
At alle tymes, thogh him gamed or smerte,
All the time even though he hurt and suffered,
535:
And thanne his neighebor right as hymselve.
And he treated his neghbor as he would himself,
536:
He wolde thresshe, and therto dyke and delve,
He desired her, and to there he would work and toil,
537: For cristes sake, for every povre wight,
For Christ's sake, for every poor man pulled,
538:
Withouten hire, if it lay in his myght.
Without payment, if he was able to,
539:
His tithes payde he ful faire and wel,
He paid his entire tithe happily and without problem,
540:
Bothe of his propre swynk and his catel.
With both of his swine and cattle,
541:
In a tabard he rood upon a mere.
In his tabard he rode upon a mare,
542:
Ther was also a reve, and a millere,
There was also a miller and a manager of estate,
543:
A somnour, and a pardoner also,
A summoner and a pardoner also,
544:
A maunciple, and myself -- ther were namo.
A business agent and myself there were no others.
